JOHNNY GREAVES TAKES TORC POINT LEAD WITH SECOND AT REDBUD
PLANO, Texas (August 12, 2017) – Johnny Greaves finished second in Saturday’s “Rumble at RedBud” at RedBud MX in Buchanan, Mich., to take the TORC Series PRO 4 point lead over son CJ Greaves, who placed fourth.
Early on, it looked like Johnny was headed to victory lane when his Monster Energy Tundra went from the third starting position to the front by turn four on the new RedBud course after a three-wide pass through turn three set him up to go to the lead on the next corner. As Johnny settled into first, CJ Greaves went from fifth to third by lap two.
The complexion of the race changed on lap three when Johnny Greaves spun in turn seven and was stuck behind the tire barrier, dropping him back to fifth-place, while CJ took advantage of his father’s misfortune to move up to second.
One lap later, CJ Greaves would take the lead as he dove inside of Scott Douglas for the position. At that point, the Mutant Soda Tundra checked out and held a commanding lead heading into the competition caution at the midway point, with Johnny climbing back up into third.
As the green flag waved to resume the race, CJ once again pulled out to a comfortable lead until lap seven when his left front appeared to start smoking. CJ quickly slowed, giving the lead to Keegan Kincaid with Johnny moving up to second.
CJ would nurse his truck home to an eventual fourth-place finish, while Johnny settled into second before making a late charge on lap 10, closing to within striking distance on the 11th and final lap, but it came just a little too late on the way to a second-place finish. Kincaid’s win ended the Greaves’ Toyotas eight-race winning streak.
“I did everything right the first couple laps, then I did it all wrong in that one lap,” said Johnny Greaves. “I spun out and hit the tire and that cost me all that time. I caught back up and CJ had an unfortunate incident and that gave me a shot. I was flustered for a little bit and couldn’t get my groove on and then in the end, I started trusting the truck and committing. This track is a little bit tricky the first time out and I think I figured it out by the end.”
With the second-place finish, Johnny took sole possession of the championship lead in PRO 4, four points ahead of CJ with six races remaining this season.
The TORC Series’ “Rumble at Red Bud” concludes Sunday afternoon in round 10 of the championship.
