Gabe Johnson – TORC Rumble at Red Bud Report Moves Up to Fourth in Championship Standings
The Rumble at Red Bud lived up to its name for Gabe Johnson and the #725 Armor Steel and Metal Maxxis Tire Vision Wheel Polaris UTV. As the season begins to wind down, the battle for position is extremely valuable and with that said the team’s performance moved the Upper Michigan native into fourth place overall in the Sportsman UTV Championship standings.
The specially built Red Bud short course track really suited the UTV racers well. The combination of jumps, step-ups, tabletops, and drop offs along with a really challenging sand section brought a “Chunk of Baja” to southwest Michigan.
Saturday’s Round Eight had Gabe right in the thick of the battle right after the drop of the green flag. Somehow the Armor Steel and Metal Maxxis Tire UTV seems to get involved with the same competitor in almost every round of competition and the first race of the weekend was no different. The resulting contact knocked a coolant hose off the Polaris UTV requiring Gabe to end the race just past the halfway point in the race.
Fortunately, the damage wasn’t terminal as the team replaced the damaged hose and filled the engine with coolant. Few other adjustments were made and Gabe’s dad, Paul Johnson deemed the red and black UTV ready for the Sunday afternoon race.
The eight lap Round Nine feature began with Gabe running mid-pack looking to move up in the order. Then on lap three, Gabe heard a loud pop as the UTV lost the front differential relegating Johnson to just two-wheel drive. Now racing at a definite disadvantage, Johnson continued on to a seventh place finish.
“We seem to get caught up with the guy almost every time out,” noted Gabe Johnson. “I know the racing is close and the points are very important, but we just have to keep moving forward with our race program looking to improve at every track. We were the best finishing Polaris in the class and Sunday’s performance moved us up one spot in the standings. Now it’s on to Crandon for the chance to win a World Championship ring. I have to thank Vision wheel for supporting the team this weekend as well as for the rest of the season.”
As mentioned, the next stop of the TORC Series presented by AMSOIL is September 1-2 in Crandon, Wisconsin for the TORC- Keys to the Big House event and the change to compete for the World Championship title.
Gabe Johnson would like to thank the team’s marketing partners including:
