Chad Rayford: TORC Rumble at Red Bud Race Report
Chad Rayford headed to the “Rumble at Red Bud” looking to build on the team’s runner-up finish at Bark River. At times the red #29 Kenda Tire PRO-Light looked primed for another celebration, but mechanical issues prevented the CR29 Motorsports from moving up in the championship points chase.
When Rayford and the Flying Dutchman Off-Road crew arrived at Red Bud, a brand new one mile long track was on display creating a level of uncertainty when it came to chassis set-up. The technical layout would feature a variety of challenges that motocross riders typically face including a wicked sand section. Along with the proper suspension set-up, keeping miscues to a minimum and reading a constantly changing track would be the keys to a successful weekend.
Saturday saw the bright red #29 PRO-Light qualify sixth quick, putting Rayford in the front row of the land rush start.
The eleven lap Round 9 began with plenty of contact as the field headed through the first two turns. Rayford was holding his own running in the fifth position during the first five laps. After the mandatory caution Rayford began pressing looking to move up a few spots. Suddenly the handling of the truck really fell off. Chad did what he could with the ill handling truck and eventually finished the race in sixth place.
Quickly the team went to work searching for the solution. After a very close inspection process a broken right front suspension spring was the source of the handling issues. With a spare in the hauler, the team went to work replacing the spring.
The start of Sunday’s finale, Rayford grabbed the holeshot to the first corner. Then for the next two and half laps, the #29 Kenda Tire PRO-Light looked like it was the truck to beat. Then brake issues slowed the truck’s lap times. What started as an intermittent brake issue turned into no brakes at all. This caused Chad to give up the lead, but continued on to salvage a solid fourth place finish.
“The broken spring really prevented a solid run on Saturday,” noted Chad Rayford. “Then right from the start on Sunday this Kenda Tire equipped PRO-Light was spot on. Unfortunately, the brake problem definitely took us off our game. Heck when we headed back to the paddock, the left front rotor was sheared right off the hub. I have to thank our newest partner, Ultra Wheels for coming on board for Red Bud and the rest of the season.”
Next race is September 2-3 Crandon International Off-Road Raceway. Remember if you can’t get to see a TORC event live, each weekend will be streamed live at torcseries.com.
