Chad Rayford: TORC Bark River Race Report
The season has been a roller coaster ride for Chad Rayford and his independent CR29 Motorsports team. At times the team has nearly tasted victory as well as faced serious adversity. Rayford’s never give up attitude continued definitely won out by the time the final checkered flag was waved at the TORC “Throw Down in the UP”.
After experiencing a horrific crash during round six at the start of Round 6, Chad Rayford thanks to the added support of Mike Vanden Heuvel and Flying Dutchman Off-Road had the #29 Kenda Tire PRO-Light ready for the technical layout of Bark River International Off-Road Raceway.
The two Friday practice sessions and the Saturday morning shakedown session saw the CR29 Motorsports team continue to make adjustments to reconstructed race truck.
The start of Round 7 saw the red #29 Kenda Tire PRO-Light grab the early lead. Quickly Rayford knew there was a steering issue as the truck would without warning, jump to one side. This reduced the pace of the truck, but Chad would battle to overcome the handling issues to finish the race in fifth place.
Chad and his crew continued to make adjustments to the truck looking to get the steering working properly for the second try at technical yet high-flying 1.5-mile layout.
Sunday’s Round 8 had the red Kenda Tire truck on the front row for the start. This time the Appleton, Wisconsin grabbed the holeshot and immediately knew his truck was much better suited for the track’s conditions. Then just before the halfway mandatory caution flags came out, Rayford lost one position to Cody Kleiman. On the restart, Rayford kept the leader in his sights and cruised to a comfortable second place finish. This was Chad Rayford third second place finish of the season.
“Finishing second means a lot to me and my team,” noted Chad Rayford. “This was my first time ever racing at Bark River and just getting the truck back on the track after Crandon was victory. The truck just didn’t handle very well on Saturday, but we never gave up. The steering issue was corrected, a few more chassis adjustments were made, and then Kenda Mike grooved up a new set of Kenda Tires that really matched the track conditions. Again thanks to Mike Vanden Heuvel and Flying Dutchman Off-Road, Mike Higgs and Kenda Tire, all my guys that volunteer at CR29 Motorsports, Shawn Morris and everyone that lends a hand.”
Next race is August 12-13 at Red Bud MX in Buchanan, Michigan. Remember if you can’t get to see a TORC event live, each weekend will be streamed live at torcseries.com.
