Hanegraaf finishes Seventh in the Standings
Kevin Hanegraaf and the Allies of Autism PRO-2 off road race team headed to the final weekend of the TORC Series presented by AMSOIL in Elk River, Minnesota looking for strong performances and solid finishes as it completed its first season at the PRO level. The team had its ups and downs during the weekend, but pressed on to compete in all three rounds of racing.
The Elk River Motor Park (ERX) is one of the premier short-course racing facility’s in the country. The huge elevation changes, the whoops, the sand section and the unique corners really pose a challenge for every driver in the TORC Series making laps around the .9-mile layout.
Racing began on Friday as the severe weather back in June postponed Round 4 until the final weekend of the season. The field of fourteen PRO-2WD truck lined up for the fourteen lap affair with the #29 23 Allies for of Autism hot rod starting in the middle of the pack. The race saw Hanegraaf more than hold his own has be ran in the seventh position for much of the race. Then with just three laps to go a suspension issue made the red and white truck a handful to drive relegating Kevin Hanegraaf to a ninth place finish.
The team quickly went to work accessing the truck looking any other issues that need attention. What is unique about the Allies for of Autism team is the lack of background noise in their pit area. The entire set-up is solar powered. All the impact wrenches are rechargeable 20-volt units. The lights and the hauler’s air conditioning system runs quietly without the need for a diesel or gasoline powered generator.
Saturday saw qualifying take place to set the field for Round 12. After three laps, Hanegraaf qualified the #23 Allies for Autism truck eighth fastest in the seventeen truck field. After a solid start to the race and running some of the most competitive laps this season, an ignition issue literally stopped the truck in its tracks forcing an early retirement. Officially finishing in twelfth place.
Once back at the team pit area, the crew found that an internal part in the distributor had broken apart which prevented the engine from firing. The team didn’t have a spare, but Pete Delorey from P-Dank Off-Road Performance saved the day as his fully stocked at-track parts trailer had the exact component Kevin needed to get the truck ready for Sunday’s final race of the season.
The final race of the season saw Kevin Hanegraaf in a great battle for the sixth position. On lap seven just before the halfway mandatory caution, Hanegraaf caught a rut in turn four and rolled one and half times putting the Chevy powered truck on its roof. It took the track safety crew some time got get the 3700-pound race truck back on its wheels, but when they did, the fire damage prevented Kevin from finishing the race.
For the season Kevin Hanegraaf and the Allies for of Autism team ran in sixth position most of the season, however due to the events this past weekend, the teamfinished the TORC PRO-2WD Championship in seventh place overall.
“This season saw plenty of peaks and valleys,” noted Kevin Hanegraaf. “The change in the class rules put our Sportsman team right in the middle of a PRO-2 battle every weekend. There were times where we held more than our own, but other times our lack of funding showed in our results. I really have to thank my family, crew and sponsors for all their support, without them I wouldn’t be able compete in this great form of motorsports. Either way we hope that were are bringing awareness and support in the fight to find a solution that prevents Autism as a well as a cure for those coping with Autism.”
